JULY 11 ASA Premier Division Re-Cap..........
Before Eric Holmes captured the Bi-Mart Firecracker 150, the Douglas County Speedway was splashed with 18 ASA Premier
Division race cars for its 50-Lap feature. Winchester's Kyle Pope seemed poised to win the event, but Howard
Ford past him on Lap 29 and cruised to comfortable win. Ford, Crescent City, Calif., is the 2007 North State Challenge Series
champion. Dale Roth's streak of three consecutive ASA wins ended, but he did post a strong second place finish. Pope held
on for third place and Trent Estes placed fourth. Season points leader Wake Koens had setup problems Saturday night and finished
out of the top five. Harlan Koens, fresh off a third place finish last weekend, was running third before Roth made contact
with his No. 18 and the elder Koens broke an arm bar and wasn't able to return. Last year's DCS Late Model champ, Mark Potoff
blew a motor midway through the race and the No. 32 team said they are finished for the season.
Thunder rolled before lightning struck
By BZ ZELLER
Race fans witnessed a different combination of thunder and lightning Saturday night at the Douglas
County Speedway.
Because following Kevin Johnson racing his big rig to the checkered flag after capturing the Rolling Thunder Semi Truck feature, lightning
struck and flash rain fell to the track and put an end to the race card.
Johnson, from Chehalis, Wash., led midway through the 25-Lap event only to
relinquish the top spot and later regain the lead during the waning circuits.
“I had a good run early, but had to come back in the end,” Johnson
said. “We didn’t have the fastest truck out there, but we were in the right place when it counted.”
Eight Semis from the Rolling Thunder group made the trek from Washington for
the local show. Organizer Mike Gibbons, who drives the red, white and blue No. 76, grabbed the lead past Johnson’s No.
27 on Lap 13, but faded to fourth at the finish. Scott Zahn finished second and Jeff Swanstrom, who won the fast heat, finished
third.
Dale Roth won the 25-Lap ASA Premier Division Main.
Roth, who started scratch from the tail end of the 13-car field, passed Wade
Koens on the inside of Lap 19 before cruising to victory. Koens, who has led the ASA Premier points race the entire season,
went on to post a second place finish and Alan Cress was third. Roth remains in third place in the points race behind Matt
Klaas, who finished fourth in Saturday’s race.
The second of the two scheduled ASA Mains was canceled due to the rain spurt.
In Super Stock action, Bobby Edwards won the Main, the Trophy Dash and the
Time Trial. Following Edwards to the checkered in the Main was Don Moore and Bob Brumback in second and third respectively.
Don Livermore won the first Heat. Edwards and Brumback are first and second in the season points race.
Winston’s Jim Smith topped a 17-car Mini Stock field to win the 25-Lap
Main.
Smith raced his way to the lead on Lap 6 and didn’t allow a challenging
Rob Mueller to take away the win. Mueller the current points leader and 2007 champion finished a close second with Dave Wilson,
who is second in points, in third. Smith sits third in the season standings.
Ross Huffman won the Junior Stinger Main and Shane Kopp won the Dash. Molly
Jobe won the Lady Stinger Dash.
Mike Batman continued his Oldtimer racing dominance by winning another Main
and increasing his season points lead. Dean Cast and Mark Minter were second and third.
Racing resumes Saturday at the Douglas County Speedway featuring a Motorhome
race, the ASA Premier Division, Street Stocks, Super Stocks, Mini Stock Invitational, Hornets, J-Cars and Mini Vans. A firework
display will be provided for the spectators and children will have the opportunity to ride in selected racecars. • You can reach Douglas County Speedway announcer/writer BZ Zeller by e-mail

Alberding arises for title defense
By BZ ZELLER
June 22, 2008
Andy Alberding took his last chance, made it an opportunity and
then cashed in on a Casey Diemert Classic victory Saturday night at the Douglas County Speedway.
The Winston racer, who is defending his 2007 American Speed Association/Northwest
Sprintcar Racing Series championship, won his first race of the season.
Mike Basher, Tacoma, Wash., snatched the lead on Lap 14 from pole sitter R.J.
Fronsman, in the 40-Lap feature. Alberding, who started ninth in the 14-car field, had advanced to fifth when Basher led and
advanced to the second spot on Lap 23.
Piloting the shiny, red No. 76, Alberding was drawn to Basher’s tail
on a restart following a caution on Lap 30. Basher, in his black No. 13, was able to fend off the faster Alberding on the
restart, but another caution on the ensuing lap gave Alberding another try for the lead. When the green flag flew, Alberding
darted to low groove on Turn 1 and drove by Basher on the inside.
“I got a good run on him (Basher),” Alberding said. “I missed
passing him on the first restart and I thought that was my last chance. I needed that caution or else I don’t end up
winning the race.”
The annual Classic is named in tribute to the late Casey Diemert, a Roseburg
High graduate and former DCS champ who was killed in a 1999 practice session at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway.
This year’s winner was quick to address gratitude following the checkered
flag.
“It’s such an honor to be able to compete in a race named after
Casey,” Alberding said. “I’m also very fortunate to be provided with a top notch car from (co-owners) Norm
and Darlene Chamberlain and Dick Upton.”
While Alberding enjoyed returning to the spotlight, ASA/NSRA points leader
and RHS grad Matt Hein’s night faded.
Hein began the program by winning the qualifying session with a fast lap of
12.601 seconds. He started the feature along side Alberding in the grid’s fifth row, but succumbed to mechanical failure
on Lap 17, returned to the race, but only to be towed off the track on Lap 30.
Justin Mack, Benton City, Wash., won the A Dash and Rick Brown, Springfield,
won the B Dash. Basher and Fronsman each won Heat races.
Two other tours where also on hand at the speedway.
Jimmy Hansen, an 18-year-old prodigy from Cedar Lake, Ind., won the Northwest
Legends 50-Lap Main and Mark Arroyo, Garberville, Calif., won the 30-Lap Thunder Roadster Main.
In the local portion of the race card, Amos Rhodes won the 40-Lap Street Stock
Main. The Port Orford driver led the final 22 laps, cruised to victory and increased his lead as the season points leader.
Grants Pass’ Rick Jump was second and Tyrell Mead, Roseburg finished third.
Roseburg’s Jeff Solberg won the Hare and the Hounds Hornet feature. Tyler
Risley and Israel Curdy were second and third respectively.
Last year’s J-Car points champ, Clint Hatfield survived the 10-Lap, full-contact
finale race for the trophy.
Racing resumes Saturday night at DCS featuring Rolling Thunder Big Rig Racing
Semi Trucks, ASA Premier Division Double Mains, Super Stocks, Mini Stocks, Oldtimers and Junior and Lady Stingers. Gates open
at 4 p.m.
